[Josuke turns up at Castle Josuhan Lüvchaque surprisingly early, braving the sun for just long enough to drive through Bavan in one piece. Well, mostly. The cats didn't seem too happy but at least it was only a short ride and, with a new place to explore, they had settled in quickly. If he were being perfectly honest, he might even admit that he was looking forward to spending some time here; he likes this old-new place and, in spite of their bickering, he likes its owner too. Both of them. While he isn't sure whether he'll take Rohan up on his offer of a more permanent place here yet, he definitely feels more at ease with them nearby.

Even so, he waits until he has a chance to speak to Jotaro alone to do the whole gift thing, catching him just outside the dining room with a grin.]

Hey, hold up, I've got something for you. Close your eyes. [Only when the gargoyle obliges does he press a carefully wrapped present into his claws.] Guess what it is.

[Shouldn't be too hard; how many rectangular, hard-covered items can Jotaro think of?]

A little dumbfounded, he obediently ends up with his eyes closed and his claws open, trying to work out what it is by touch as he's been bidden. It feels sort of like a book, and then that begs the question of whether Josuke actually did get him a book, and then by extension if it's going to offend him if he guesses that it's a book when really it's something else, and then there's the obligatory why would you think I would get you a book conversation that he's done variants on with amorous fangirls and Joseph Joestar for years and years of his life.

Social bullshit is so trying, sometimes.]

Got it in one. Sorry, I didn't know how to wrap it up in a way that'd make it less obvious. [There is some mystery left, though and it probably shows in the slightly mischievous edge that his smile takes on.] Go ahead and open it.

[Tugging aside the bow and peeling back the brightly patterned paper will, unsurprisingly enough, reveal a book. Though it's clearly old, with that comforting musty smell and slightly worn leather bindings, it's in pretty good condition with the title printed across both the spine and cover in gold: Marine Lyfe of the Vandare Coast. A flick through gives glimpses of maps, zoological illustrations and descriptions and-

[ So, Rohan can't seem to catch a break every other month. He made the mistake of making a very vague deal with Mana-- this time for a change in his monster type for a little while. He hadn't asked for any in particular but he didn't want to stray TOO much from the norm. Manticore or Werebear would have been a little much. Later on the night of the fifth of January, he found his tail not agreeing with him again-- not wanting wriggle correctly, scales falling off. This time he was sort of prepared for it.

Sparing the details, hours later the whole damn thing split itself down the middle in one of those HORRIBLE PAIN MOMENTS HE DIDN'T ASK FOR. Of course he had legs again. That was fine... The aftermath resulted in... Not what he was expecting. Rohan locked himself in his room for two days to cobble together how he was going to deal with his present fiasco. All of his black scales bleached out to a shiny, iridescent white that shimmered green or pink in the light. From his neck sprouted frilly bits that covered the gill-like slits that bored their way in. Honestly, he didn't look much different from when he was a human again... The legs were mostly the factor. Each forearm sported long wrist-to-elbow frills which matched the ones he also had falling from each leg. Overly floofy after having existed for only a couple of days now, Rohan looked like the most disgruntled wedding dress anyone could imagine.

Of course he ended up saddled with being a fish in January.

He'd managed to mostly dodge Jotaro by coming out of his room during the day to fetch himself the bare minimum of water-- which helped nothing at all and he was growing more parched the longer he avoided his bathtub. A little tailoring of his leftover pants made him presentable enough to make the executive decision to have somebody, anybody give him a hand. Rohan preened in his mirror in an attempt to fix his hair and fluff out his frills to look presentable. Tired and thirsty, but presentable.

He had yelled down the hall for Jotaro already. Looking, uh, decent would help.

But the longer he stared at the mirror, the more upset he was starting to feel. Not the depressed kind, but rather the kind where his own reflection combing its fingers through its hair was getting agitating. That was one beautiful man in that mirror... One he didn't trust. With a huff, Rohan's silly little gill frills started to unfurl and flare out at either side of his neck. His pointy little teeth hissed and a long finger pointed at the mirror to touch it.

Was he really about to show off at his reflection...

Answer: His arm and leg fins did their thing and fluffed up too. He hopped onto his toes and did little ballerina-esque turns left and right. And, boy howdy, was he convinced that Other Rohan was mocking him as he copied him.

Hissing and posturing at his own reflections. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. ]

JOTARO. GET IN HERE.

[You'd think that by now, he would be used to shit like this.

The truth of the matter is, it isn't like he doesn't understand where some of Rohan's more impulsive ideas come from, even if they're not ideas that he would choose to pursue himself. He doesn't always get the attachment to the Fog God, either, but it's not his life and it's not his call on that one. What he does understand is Rohan's need to experience, and by extension his need to pursue; he's not someone who can be complacent, any more than his father is someone who could live without a guitar in his hands and music in the air. Rohan needs to do weird things because Rohan needs to know, and so after a while he's sort of just stopped asking things like "what could've possessed you to do something like that", because it's a stupid question that he already knows the answer to, anyway.

So when Rohan yells for him, and he heads down the hall to go investigate the same way that he always does, he's already sort of prepared for whatever ridiculous thing he's going to find on the other side.

...

Except that he's not prepared for legs and fins and frills, and in that first moment as his jaw falls open, his blood has no idea where it's supposed to be going, because it starts to seem like it's pounding in his ears and flushing up into his face and flowing southward all in the same instant.

Holy shit.]

...What did you do.

[He croaks out, through a mouth abruptly gone dry, as his body temperature ramps up to accompany the heat already beneath his cheeks and he realizes that he'd be turning purple right now if his scales weren't always purple already.]

Holy shit, Rohan...

[ If it's any consolation, none of his gifts from Mana have been in the name of the Fog God. They have been for enhancing his experience to avoid growing too complacent. If that means having her make a 'mistake', then he's got that one in the bag. This is just one less monster he needs to be at any point in time to scribble down.

Just for right now, it's the end of the world for a little while. Hell, he might like it when he stops hating himself in the mirror.

That is not particularly likely with how much he likes to look at himself but let's just say he might get over it. Might.

Jotaro opens the door and he is leaning face-first into his mirror, and is therefore nose to nose with his stupid reflection spending too much time challenging his authority as master of the house. It's so stupid and so, so silly. He has both hands on the mirror too, claws tap-tapping away at it. ]

You stay out of my room... [ He whispers to the fish in he mirror. He knows DAMN good and well that he's being very, very dumb about this. Yet, here he is when Jotaro opens the door. He spends a few seconds with his cheek at the mirror, batting at it with a gill frill-- thump-thump. Rohan tears himself reluctantly from the mirror to face the door fully.

The blushing Jotaro takes precedence for now. His fins are still all fluffed out-- if he had a few more, would look like a Vegas showgirl in all the embarrassing ways he can count on one hand. His hands fly to his hips, one knee pops up. ]

Mana fucked up and turned me into a-- [ Uh, that face isn't once he's really seen yet. On. ]

Are you alright? What is it?

[ What a Dreamscape Hell that was. Rohan got off without his memory being vandalized too badly. It's namely the cartoon dragons that one girl had drawn into his guestbook prancing about like a parade that are driving him crazy.

On the bright side, he hasn't been reverted back to a snake yet and his 'date' with Jotaro didn't have to be put on hold any longer. Touchdown on the Vandare beach-- on a day warmer than most (global warming???) fluttered Rohan down onto his feet from Jotaro's arms just short of the shoreline. Their relationship status has gone from secret to open back and forth depending on who's asking. However, they can both agree when they are by themselves. ]

And here I thought that I'd lose my legs before we could go to the back again. [ He huffs and kicks a little bit of sand with his already bare feet. ] I haven't done a whole lot in open water like this.

Don't be surprised if I drown...

I'm pretty sure you're not actually allowed to drown when you're part fish.

[He's always more relaxed when he's at the beach, though, and today is no exception; fog afternoons are always a rare treat because it means he can be out in the actual daytime, and he really does start to miss the daylight after a while, if he goes too long without seeing it.

Idly, he reaches for Rohan's hand and picks it up in his, not really caring about things like whether anyone's around to see or what it might mean or not. They're on a beach, and now they're on a beach holding hands. That's pretty much fine with him.]

Besides. You really don't think I'd rescue you?

[ He thought?? Don't let him get caught up in being wrong. Encyclopedia Kujo over here might call him on it but still. He pouted out his lower lip and turned his nose skyward with a little huff. ]

I don't know how good you are at swimming. It would be a comedy of errors that aren't so funny in the end. [ That was a little dark for a date. It was hard to say that either of them would have expected anything less from Rohan of all monsters. Being able to kick up sand as he walked was kind of fun. His silly leg fins had gotten a little longer to brush against his ankles and tickled when they touched the sand. He was clearly enjoying it too, hand in hand with Jotaro, his eyes trained on the water. ]

So do you want to see how this actually works or are we stalling because I have to ditch my pants again?
