[NOT THAT HE STARED AT ROHAN'S LEGS A LOT OR ANYTHING.]
So what you're saying is, I better start practicing at turning that off?
this sounded less gay in my head but here we are
Unless you want me to stay out of sight for a month.
That defeats the purpose of enjoying myself, doesn't it? You're involved if I'm really going to be...
I spent those coins on the castle for me since I needed a better place to stay. I could have bought something smaller for only myself... [ He's trying NOT to make that sound totally selfish but it's selfish as Hell. No one should be surprised. ]
I spent an extra few for somewhere you could stay too. I know the location is dingy and not ideal and the building is TOO BIG, but the only room with a view is a room with you in it.
[ Oh. ]

oh my god that line is so shitty he can't help but be compelled by it
he, the reigning king of shitty lines, has just been hit with a shitty line of his own AND IT'S SO STUPID AND YET SO GOOD
he's gonna die]
...You want it to be an "us" thing. Not just a "you" thing.
[OH MY GOD]
Keep talking like that and there's no way I'm going to stand a chance of keeping my temperature under control.
no subject
SEND HELP. ]
What-- [ Game has been met with more game. Things are looking up. ]
Am I allowed to insinuate that I want it to be an "us" thing? [ Not touching the temperature line for a second here. Let's get the Important things out of the way. ] I won't complain.
[ not likely. ]
no subject
[It makes him reflect, though, mulling over the possibilities. And the mulling ends up leaving him so preoccupied that he doesn't even notice that he's started giving their clasped hands little tiny swings again, swaying back and forth between them.]
...Would you want me to try being human at the same time, too? That'd solve the temperature problem.
no subject
Rohan perks an eyebrow. He hadn't thought of that... ]
You too? Only if you want. It would make things easier-- [ INHAAALE. ] If we're going down that route.
no subject
[He waggles his eyebrows beneath the brim of his hat, eyes gleaming.]
You've got ideas, huh.
no subject
Easier to not melt in your presence or hold hands or whatever you want to do! [ He jerks up his arm to bring their hands to eye-level. ] This!
no subject
[Did Rohan mean it like that? Probably not. Is he going to pretend to take it that way anyway? Naturally.]
...There, look. There's something in the sand up ahead.
no subject
[ This has to be affectionate antagonizing but there is no making Rohan realize the difference. He drops their hands without letting go, taking every opportunity for redirection. ]
Let's go--... [ Begrudgingly. ] Can you see sea glass from this angle?
no subject
[He tugs Rohan along, over to the place he'd been indicating, and then digs absently in the sand with his taloned toes before picking his foot up and dropping a clump of sand into his free hand.
It's so weird, being that adept with his feet.]
Though it might be a shell, or garbage — who knows? That's kind of the fun.
no subject
Digging around in the sand was fun when I was five.
[ Don't ask him about all the trash he's looked for on the beach back home for Material. He's going to say this is a kid thing. Snakebutt swings around the way it does when he wants to pick something up with it, brushing away at the sand-covered something in Jotaro's hand. He'd be lying if he said he wasn't curious... ]
no subject
It's not still fun now?
[He offers his hand palm-up, showing it to Rohan.]
Here. It looks kind of like one of your pen nibs.
no subject
[ Snakebutt sweeps off the last of the sand it can easily get and reveals the shell hidden beneath it. It's... Just a shell. ]
You're giving it to me? [ His tail moves out of the way letting Rohan pluck it up from the gargoyle's hand. ] Thank you...? I'll find something to do with it. It doesn't have a matching one, so earrings are out of the question.
Of which I need more. [ It's more of a passing thought as he holds up the shell near one of the dangly bits near his ear. ]
no subject
[He pauses, glancing out at the water, and then seems to contemplate this a little further at length.]
Do you know how to make earrings? Like...if I just brought you things, you'd be able to do the rest for yourself?
no subject
[ Fussing over his appearance is going to be sort of a big deal RIGHT NOW because let's remember he just shredded his nice shirt up because Mom didn't like them standing too close to each other.
Why this. ]
Jewelry isn't hard to make. I have enough things at the shop to string pieces together. I have so many necklaces and the like at the castle from shiny things I've been collecting. I made one out of bells.
[ He's worn the bell one like twice ever but it's a favorite. ]
Bring me whatever you want. I can make something out of anything. If you find another shell like this one, they can have sentimental value. [ Oh-ho-ho, cue a flat bat of his eyes. ]
no subject
[Like he's one to talk, with his own gargoyle hoarding tendencies bouncing around somewhere in there, himself.]
Do you want to wait here while I go see what's beneath the surf in the shallows? I've been kind of wondering whether I can swim with wings and scales, anyway.
no subject
This is where he will let go of Jotaro's hand. ]
Sure. Let's see how much water evaporates when you try. [ Half teasing, half completely serious. ]
no subject
[And thus we have yet another Jotahan thread that involves Jotaro removing articles of clothing for a completely thread-relevant reasons. It's a good thing this narration is entirely OOC and tongue-in-cheek so the nonexistent narrator can point out how completely ridiculous this is.
Still, he doesn't want his entire wardrobe to end up soaked, so he methodically gets rid of his shirt and we're going to pretend that he's been in board shorts this entire time because we're not going to worry too much about the logistics here. The logistics are not what is important.
JOTARO'S TAKING OFF HIS SHIRT, THAT'S WHAT'S IMPORTANT.
And once he's set it aside and safely out of reach of the waves, he starts off down the beach toward the surf, pulling his wings in close to his back and splashing eagerly into the water until it's about up to his mid-thigh.
On normal people that'd probably be to their waist or so, but he's tall.]
You see any steam rising yet?
no subject
Rohan stays relatively out of the way of the water and Snakebutt goes about manipulating the sand with its weight and movement to make a little spot for the naga to coil up and nest in. It's right where the waves are able to lap at his scales-- which doesn't feel all that terrible now that they are starting to fade from purple to black again. ]
None yet. [ He calls out from next to his hand cupped at his mouth. ] Do me a favor and see if you stay wet after you go under. [ And see if your hat stays on. ]
no subject
He shifts around a bit as he continues to wade out into the deeper water, shoulders adjusting and flexing as he seems to try to work out what he even is doing with his wings. Air resistance and water resistance are two very different beasts, and the last thing he wants is to make an elegant swan dive into the water that hits the bone structure in his wings the wrong way and rips one of them off or something.
Life is hard when you're the Designated Flier™.
In the end, he pulls them in close and tight, making sure his attention is on holding them where they'll streamline against his back before pushing off with his feet and sliding along the surface of the water, getting accustomed to the feeling of swimming with wings on his back.
It's a little gawky at first, but he's making an attempt, and with a minimum of haphazard splashing besides.]
no subject
Can you do the thing that flying fish do or are you too bulky for that one? [ He's not a whale, Rohan. You can't just make him do tricks and promise him fish later. The lattermost end of Snakebutt reeeeaches out to a wet patch that isn't being overtaken by the water behind him.
Can Snakebutt draw too? It sure can. It's going to capture this whether it sticks around or not. ]
And how does it feel?
no subject
GIVE IT ITS OWN SHOUJO ANIME
SHOUJO'S BUTT-ZARRE ADVENTURE
but in seriousness he's doing his best, though he's clearly still trying to swim like a human and not like a dragon. After a minute or two of getting used to things, though, he's ready to try going underwater properly, and slips beneath the surf like a diving submarine, then reemerges a bit later with water dripping from his hat, his horns, and every appendage.]
Remember what you said once, about my shoulders and back carrying all the weight? It's so much easier — the water's supporting them now, it's lighter.
no subject
If you go under the water and try to flap them, you'll feel more resistance but it shouldn't be as hard on your joints. [ Getting all scientific like that night back at the shop. ] It's why physical therapists use water as a means for treating sports injuries. You get the resistance you need to make the muscles and bones work without the harsh impact.
If anything, swimming should make you fly better... [ Keep flappin', Lizard Boy. ]
no subject
[He thinks about it, then waves at Rohan before moving out into still-deeper water, where his feet aren't touching bottom and he's treading water in the surf.
From there it's easy to duck underwater and paddle around a little, working up his conviction to open his wings and start learning how to use them to swim in addition to his arms and legs. It's a gawky, slow process; it was hard enough getting used to his wings in dry air, and now he's doing it all over again in the water.
But eventually he starts thinking of manta rays, and how they move through the water with great sweeps of their winglike fins, and starts trying to adapt his own wingbeats to that mental image until his air runs out and he needs to resurface again.]
